MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee police officer was hurt in a shooting Wednesday after police tried to stop a man who was carrying a rifle and firing shots into the air.

In a media briefing, Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said officers asked the man, who was carrying a semi-auto rifle, to stop shooting. Norman said the man refused, and instead shot at officers.

That's when a 37-year-old male officer with eight years of service fired at the man. Sources tell TMJ4 the suspect later died.

A 34-year-old male police officer, also with eight years of service, was hurt in the exchange of gunfire. The officer was shot twice - once in the torso and once in the leg, sources say.

The officer was taken to the hospital with "serious" injuries, Chief Norman said.

"This is not acceptable. This type of behavior must stop," Norman said.

The suspect involved in the shooting has not yet been identified.

The officers involved will be put on administrative duty, according to normal protocol.

The Oak Creek Police Department will lead the investigation into the shooting.

"There will be a thorough investigation conducted of this incident," Milwaukee County District Attorney Ken Lovern said at the media briefing.
