WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- Neighbors in Wisconsin Rapids welcomed an unusual visitor to the city Wednesday morning - a large black bear.

The bear, which police estimate weights between 250-300 pounds, was walking through the city early this morning. After "getting a little frightened of the expressway traffic near Lincoln Street," the bear decided to climb a large pine tree.

Lt. Brian Krzykowski says the bear may be as high as 50 feet up in the tree.

"The DNR Warden advised that the bear might stay in the tree until tonight," a post on the department's Facebook page reads.

If you're in the Wisconsin Rapids area, police want to remind you that bears are, of course, wild animals. Just leave it alone, and eventually it will climb down and wander away, they say.
