Lake Michigan water levels continue to rise

MILWAUKEE — From erosion, coastal and river flooding to boating, fishing and keeping our kids safe while swimming, the effect of a higher Lake Michigan expands as fast as the water is rising.

Lake Michigan drownings are actually up over 80% in 2019.

Many homes may also fall victim to erosion. These are the extremes we've seen with rising water. Many others are having to make lifestyle adjustments, including boaters.

Taking a leisurely river cruise down the Milwaukee River is a thing of the past with even smaller boats no longer fitting under the bridges of downtown.

It's important to realize the rising water didn't happen overnight, and it may take just as long for the water to eventually go down. The problem is here to stay for a while. Given recent wet months and a potential snowier-than-normal winter, the water may actually rise even higher next summer.
