KENOSHA — Its deli serves everything from burgers to bratwursts, with an ample amount of cheese, of course. If you ever have driven from Milwaukee to Chicago on Interstate 94, chances are you have seen — and likely stopped — at the Mars Cheese Castle.
The cheese castle, which opened in 1947, recently was selected as the fifth-best rest stop in America by carrentals.com.
With an on-site taproom, a souvenir shop and an extraordinary cheese shop, visitors get sidetracked easily from their trips.
The top rest stop, according to carrentals. com, is the Iowa 80 Truck Stop in Walcott, Iowa. It is billed as the world’s largest truck stop and includes a movie theater, laundromat, several fast-food restaurants and a museum about trucking.
Here are the other top spots (in order): Jubitz Truck Stop and Travel Center, Portland, Oregon; South of the Border, Hamer, South Carolina; Pops 66 Soda Ranch, Arcadia, Oklahoma; Wall Drug Store, Wall, South Dakota; Space Aliens Bar and Grill, Fargo, North Dakota; and Pea Soup Andersen’s, Buellton, California.
