A woman in a kayak helped rescue a dog who fell into freezing cold water in Monona, Wis. Thursday morning.

The Monona Fire Department responded to a call of a dog in the water who couldn't get onto the ice to get out according to our sister station WISC-TV.

First responders saw the woman in the kayak once they arrived and noticed she was unable to reach the animal. They then threw her a safety rope so that he could pull herself to shore and grab the dog by its collar to guide it to safety.

The dog was then reunited with its owner.

"Thanks to a 'Good Samaritan' willing to take a chance to help this dog was rescued, but this could have ended up much more tragically," said the fire department.

The department warns citizens that conditions on the water are very dangerous as the weather warms and ice begins to melt.
