MILWAUKEE — At Milwaukee Area Technical College, 123 people from 43 different countries became United States citizens during a Naturalization Ceremony, Thursday afternoon.

For many, the road to becoming a citizen was a long journey. Christine Kithinji was born in Kenya, and she came to the United States to have more opportunities for women.

"From when I set foot in the U.S. in 2004, this has been my dream," said Christine.

Christine said taking her Oath of Allegiance was a defining moment in her life, and she is now looking forward to the upcoming opportunities.

"To be able to register as a voter and I will apply for an American passport. I am looking forward to traveling with an American passport," said Christine.

Mohamed Mohamed went to the ceremony to support his sister from Somalia.

"I am so proud of her," said Mohamed.

Despite the many differences between the new citizens, Honorable Judge Beth Hanan reminded the crowd, their diversity is part of what our country is made up of.

"Your presence and effort are part of what makes this country so dynamic," said Judge Hanan.

The League of Woman Voters helped many of the new citizens register to vote.
