RACINE COUNTY, WI - One person is dead following a rollover semi crash in Racine County.
The crash shut down I-94 northbound for most of the morning prompting a lot of traffic troubles on the roads and a chaotic commute for Katie Lugo and hundreds of other drivers in the Racine/ Kenosha area.
“I tried to get on the interstate, they had it blocked off then I turned around, went down HWY H and then I just decided to pull over, grab a coffee,” Lugo said.
Lugo wasn’t the only one trying to avoid hours of gridlock. Adam Kubinski of Franksville said he would have jump started his day earlier if he knew he would run into jammed roads.
“I was late for work this morning because of all the traffic. I just wish people would start driving safer," Kubinski said.
Crews responded to the crash around 3:30 AM after the Racine County Communications Center got a call about a semi truck on its side. When deputies arrived they found two semis involved in the crash.
“In southeastern Wisconsin, we have a lot of construction, it’s down to two lanes as we all know northbound an two lanes southbound. It required us to shut down the entire interstate system,” Racine County Sheriff, Christopher Schmaling said.
The stopped semi was dealing with flat tire issues when the other semi hit it causing the truck to flip on its side. The driver of the stopped semi was taken to a local hospital, but the other driver was found dead in the cab of the truck.
"We just had a 23 year who lost her life out in Rochester, Racine County —again another deadly crash with a semi-truck. We’re no strangers to these unfortunate crashes,” Sheriff Schmaling said.
The Racine County Sheriff's Office is still investigating.
