WAUWATOSA -- Around 800 athletes attended the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics bowling event in Wauwatosa Sunday.
Many families credit Special Olympics of Wisconsin for changing their child's life.
One of them is Sarah Bergstrom. Her mother tells us at one point, her daughter could not speak in public. Now the Special Olympics athlete from Glendale has come out of her shell.
"I just feel like they're a second family to me," said Sarah Bergstrom.
"They did not care about age they didn't care about if they didn't like the same thing. They just came up to her and hugged her," explained her mother Kathy Bergstrom.
That small gesture makes all the difference for families who take part.
