One person is in custody after Racine Police say a man was shot in the leg and killed on Friday night.
Racine Police say they were responding to a report of shots fired around 8:20 p.m. Friday in the 900 block of Walnut Street. That's where police say they discovered a 54-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Crews started life-saving measures upon arrival. The man was taken to Ascension Hospital, where police say he later died.
Police have not released the name, but family say the victim is Darrle Ruffin. They say he collapsed on his sister's porch, and that's when they saw he was shot in the leg.
"I look out my window and see all the lights, and I came out and he was face down," said Ruffin's brother-in-law Kenny Thigpen. "And I told his fiancé and his sister, D face down, and the police had our whole house surrounded like we the one that did something."
It's not clear why Ruffin was shot.
Earlier that night, Thigpen said he and Ruffin went to get dinner and then spent time with family at his sister's home. Then, Thigpen says Ruffin went out.
Family says Ruffin is a hardworking man and worked in construction and handy work. He leaves behind two daughters and several grandchildren, one of which was just born weeks ago.
"His daughters and his grandkids are going to miss him, we all are," said Ruffin's aunt Renee Lee. "This is just a shame that you would do this."
"Beautiful, loving, kind person and whatever and whoever did it, I want justice," Thigpen said.
