WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) in Waukesha welcomed 20 new dogs yesterday with one pup in particular marking a major milestone.

The arrival of Frisco, a one-and-a-half-year-old mixed breed, on Monday marks the 12,000th pet transported by the global non-profit, Greater Good Charities, which helps find homes for dogs.

HAWS spokesperson Jennifer Smieja said they are thrilled to partner with the charity time and again.

“Every single time the plane lands, every single time they open those doors, we hear the barks,“ she said. "We see the animals look through their crates at us, it’s just an overwhelming sense of we got this."

Frisco is one of 60 dogs that have been flown into Wisconsin from Louisiana and Alabama, to be divided between four shelters including HAWS in the southeastern part of the state.

Since Greater Good Charites started their animal transport program in April of 2021 they’ve been helping pets out of shelters that are overcrowded or sometimes dealing with natural disasters.

Once the dogs make it to their shelter Smieja said it’s a lot of work getting them settled which is only possible with the help of dedicated volunteers like Chuck Tennies.

“It’s very rewarding working with these animals, seeing them come in and get a second chance at life," Tennies said.

Within two hours of the dogs' arrival at HAWS Monday, Smieja said they had all 20 checked in, fed, bathed, snuggled, and getting play time.

HAWS usually welcomes transport pets once or two a month and pets are usually adopted in less than two weeks.
