Harley-Davidson Inc. plans to lay off 83 people at its plant in the Milwaukee area, according to a union spokesman.

Katie Whitmore told the Milwaukee Business Journal that a total of 180 manufacturing jobs are being eliminated at the Kansas City and Menomonee Falls powertrain operations plant locations.

Union officials say they plan to meet with Harley executives to discuss the layoffs.

The layoffs follow dozens of other job cuts at numerous Harley plants over the past few years.

The company expects to ship 241,000 to 246,000 motorcycles worldwide in 2017, a 6-8 percent decrease from 2016, according to the Milwaukee Business Journal.

Around 1,000 people are currently employed at the Menomonee Falls plant.
