Authorities identified the person who drowned in Geneva Lake Tuesday as Fadi A. Albazi, 22 of Morton Grove, Illinois.
Geneva Lake Police say they were notified of a possible drowning around 3:43 p.m. Tuesday on Geneva Lake near George Williams College in Williams Bay.
But the operation soon went from a rescue, to a recovery, after efforts to locate the person were unsuccessful.
An initial investigation found Albazi was being pulled on an inflatable tube by a boat with five people on board, Geneva Lake police said.
When Albazi fell off the tube, his PFD slipped off. When he began to struggle to remain above water, the people on the boat jumped into the water to try and rescue him, but were unsuccessful, police said.
Police say divers were not utilized because the area was too deep for divers and diving equipment. He was located in about 128’ of water.
The search area was about 1,700 feet south George Williams College, police said.
Multiple sonars and remote operated vehicles (ROV) were used in the search.
Geneva Lake Police are warning everyone to make sure your life jacket properly fits your height and weight, and that it is properly fastened in order for it to work.
This is the third drowning in Geneva Lake in the past two summers.
