GREENFIELD — There was a special opportunity to honor our Vietnam veterans this Memorial Day at Konkel Park.
A half-sized replica of the Vietnam Wall was on display.
Even after the closing ceremony and rain arrived, hundreds of people still waited in line to get a glimpse of more than 58,000 names of soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.
Many veterans etched names of those they served with. They shared their emotions with their family nearby.
"Memorial Day is often manifested through a day off work or a long three-day weekend or a barbecue. I hope we never forget the true meaning of Memorial Day is more than barbecues and baseball games." — Brig. Gen. Ernest Litynski
Some people left behind photos of Wisconsin soldiers who lost their lives in this war.
Brig. Gen. Ernest Litynski of the U.S. Army reminded the crowd that Memorial Day honors more than 1 million service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. "Memorial Day is often manifested through a day off work or a long three-day weekend or a barbecue. I hope we never forget the true meaning of Memorial Day is more than barbecues and baseball games," Litynski said.
