An Elkhorn mom is calling out a city worker for parking in a handicapped accessible spot. The employee in the wrong happens to be the person who usually hands out tickets.
"It's not right. That is a spot that is designated for handicapped individuals, and we needed that area," said Denise Fitzpatrick.
The Elkhorn mom pulled into First National Bank with her daughter, who uses a wheelchair, last week to find the loading zone of the lone handicapped-accessible spot taken by a government vehicle.
"I noticed a lady in a bright yellow jacket that said parking authority or something like that on the back of her coat," said Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick confronted the driver inside the bank.
"She said, I'm human," said Fitzpatrick.
Lake Geneva officials confirmed this was one of their parking vehicles. An e-mail said they were "...unloading heavy coin boxes at the bank." The city administrator said it was a mistake to park there.
The worker was not ticketed, but was verbally reprimanded.
"They should know better, but I think sometimes they take advantage of that," said Sandy Fischer McKee, neighbor.
"It's disappointing to see that a city worker would park illegally and then expect to park properly like follow the laws," said Ryan Rodriguez, neighbor.
Fitzpatrick said it's common for her to see drivers illegally parked in handicap spots. She saw it happen three times last week alone.
