An Elkhart Lake man has been charged after reportedly getting into bed with a female who was babysitting his children.

Officers were dispatched to the home in the Village of Elkhart Lake on Aug. 13 after the female's father alerted police of the situation.

Police say when they arrived at the house where the female was babysitting they located her inside a room in the upstairs of the house crying.

The female told police she was staying overnight in the guestroom because she was going to watch the children right away in the morning, according to the criminal complaint.

She also said the father of the children entered the room when she was sleeping and began to touch her. She then screamed at the man, identified as Thomas D. Shortt, to get out of the room and ran into the bathroom where she called her parents.

Investigators then found Shortt on the couch in the downstairs of the home and noted that he was extremely intoxicated.

Shortt denied any knowledge of getting into bed with the babysitter or doing anything that would be considered criminal.

He has been charged with fourth degree sexual assault, for which he faces up to $10,000 in fines and/or up to nine months in prison.
