Delafield's Smiley Barn hits snag

Smiley Barn fans in Delafield have been waiting 17 years for the smile to come back.

Unfortunately, they'll have to wait just a little while longer because the smile could not go up today. The installation was set for 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning, but soft beams and heavy signs created a safety hazard versus a beautiful design.

Barn owner Maria Luther breaks the sad news to a handful of smiley fans. Everyone was admittedly disappointed but all hope wasn't lost.

"I am not deflated. We have come through a lot of obstacles to get to this point," said Luther.

Mamie Cooley and Gene Graunke were happy to hear that the sign was still going to go up, just at another time. They admit they've waited a long time, they could wait a little longer. Mother of four, Beth Bruckner remembers the smile from her childhood.

"It's a little disappointing, but we live close so we can come back and see when they're putting the sign up. It'll be exciting for all of us," said Bruncker.

Bruncker says making a new memory of her favorite "old smile" with her kids Cain, Colton, Montana and Gunner is the goal.

But, due to pending poor weather conditions sign placement could be as early as Friday or as late as next week. So for now everyone will just have to wait.
