MARINETTE, Wis. (AP) -- An 82-year-old man has been ordered to stand trial for the murders of a couple at a Marinette County park 43 years ago.
Raymand Vannieuwenhoven is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shootings of 25-year-old David Schuldes and 24-year-old Ellen Matheys in 1976 at McClintock Park in Silver Cliff. Vannieuwenhoven was also charged with sexually assaulting Matheys, but that count has been dismissed due to the statute of limitations.
WLUK-TV reports a sheriff's detective, Todd Baldwin, testified Wednesday that tests of Vannieuwenhoven's DNA from a licked envelope was a match to DNA from the crime scene.
Investigators didn't have any major leads in the case until last year when they began working with a DNA lab in Virginia, which identified the genealogical background of the suspect.
