FRANKLIN — A traffic crash claimed the life of a Franklin High School football player and injured four others Wednesday afternoon.

The Wisconsin State Patrol responded to the two-vehicle crash about 12:15 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 90/94 near Mauston. Officials said traffic was slowed due to construction when a Ford Explorer, occupied by a mother and her teenage daughter, was struck from behind. The striking vehicle was occupied by three teenage males, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

First responders transported all occupants of the involved vehicles to the hospital.

One of the passengers in the Lexus later died as a result of his injuries.

“Our hearts go out to the families and all of our community who are impacted by this tragic event that has taken the life of one of our students and seriously injured two others," said Franklin Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Judy Mueller.

Student Services staff will provide support to staff, students and families at Franklin High School for the remainder of the week.
