CUDAHY, Wis. — One man was hurt and and apartment building with dozens of residents was evacuated Tuesday night due to a fire, according to the Cudahy Fire Department.

Fire crews were called to the Washington Town Square apartment on S. Packard Ave. at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. According to a news release from the fire department, the fire was found in a third floor unit. It had also traveled into the building's attic.

One resident, a 45-year-old man, was taken to Aurora St. Luke's South Shore Hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

Some 30 residents displaced by the fire were first taken to 414-Laundry, immediately adjacent to the apartments. They were later moved to the Cudahy Family Library, where a temporary shelter had been established. Finally, the residents were taken to Holler Park on S. 6th St., where another shelter had been established. The American Red Cross and Milwaukee County Transit System both assisted with moving the residents.

The fire department says they don't know when people will be able to return to their apartments. The building's condition will be evaluated on Wednesday.

"The Cudahy Fire Department would like to thank our mutual aid partners, who assisted in resolving this incident," the news release says. "We would also like to thank the many community members who provided and offered assistance
to the residents during their time of need. We would like to thank the South Milwaukee, Oak Creek, Greenfield, Greendale, Saint Francis and Milwaukee Fire Departments for their assistance."
