PEWAUKEE — The 2020 presidential election is one year away, and Democrats are turning up the heat on the impeachment inquiry.
It's also the first time Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner's name won't be on the ballot in four decades.
State Sen. Scott Fitzgerald is the only Republican so far running for Sensenbrenner's 5th congressional district seat.
He held a campaign kick off party in Pewaukee Sunday for supporters. Fitzgerald believes the economy will help President Trump and Republicans win in November.
"People are saying we think the president has got it on the right track," said Fitzgerald. "There may be some issue or there's something that they disagree with the president on but, people as they say, vote their pocketbook and right now they feel good about the economy."
But Democrats see an opportunity in the heavily leaning Republican district.
Tom Palzewicz is running again after losing by more than 20 points in 2018. He held a get-out-the-vote campaign event in Oconomowoc this weekend.
"We've got healthcare that's a mess, we are trying to solve it just like every other country has already figured out," said Palzewicz. "Then you look at the economy and it just doesn't work for everybody and that to me is one of the more frustrating things. The economy is supposedly doing very well, but it's not doing well for most Americans."
Right now nearly half of Americans polled support impeaching the current president.
According to an NBC News and Wall Street Journal poll, 49% want to impeach President Trump as the inquiry into his actions with the Ukraine president heats up. 46% said they don't want to impeach him.
