MILWAUKEE — Community members gathered to celebrate the start of construction at the Clovernook and Franklin Square playgrounds on Saturday. The local play-spaces are getting a makeover with the support of the Milwaukee Recreation organization.
Officials with Milwaukee Public Schools conducted the groundbreaking ceremony near 71st and Landers on Saturday, sharing renderings of the new and improved space scheduled to open next summer.
"Now that we've reopened our first two playfields, we are seeing the true impact of our efforts to provide equitable recreation opportunities for everyone in our city," said Lynn A. Greb, Senior Director of Milwaukee Recreation.
Several of Milwaukee's playgrounds were constructed during the 1920s and 1930s.
"This is what we need. Safe places, healthy places, and most importantly fun places for our kids," said Mayor Tom Barrett.
The remodeled sites feature new basketball courts, walking paths, play structures, and more.
