“It’s a difficult time for the police department. He’s a 17-year veteran who was well loved by the department and a friend of mine,” Morales said.
The shooting happened just after 5:00 p.m. near the intersection of N. 28th St. and W. Meinecke Ave.
Sources say a woman called police on her son, who was wanted on drug and gun violations, police say.
Morales said the man later opened fire at officers and a gunfire exchange followed.
"This is a very fluid investigation, things are ongoing," Morales said.
