Cedarburg denies downtown CBD dispensary

In front of a packed City Council meeting, council members denied zoning changes that would have allowed a CBD dispensary in historic downtown Cedarburg.

Jennifer Kawczynski owns Erth Dispensary and was currently making improvements to the inside of the shop she’s leasing on Washington Avenue. This is Kawczynski’s second store, she opened her first in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood last year.

Kawczynski came to Monday’s council meeting with dozens of supporters wearing blue shirts approving of the dispensary. She argued her store would be good business for downtown Cedarburg.

In recent weeks the city had denied Kawczynski’s request for the proper permits to open her business siting zoning rules in the Downtown Business District. At Monday’s public hearing residents and council spoke for and against the dispensary.

Council members and some residents said the dispensary had no place in the historic downtown. A few council members even suggested she open the store elsewhere in Cedarburg. In the end the council voted unanimously to reject any change in ordinances and deny Erth Dispensary a home in Downtown Cedarburg.

Kawczynski said this was the “end of the road” for her dispensary in Cedarburg and she will look in other nearby communities for a new location.
