One year has passed since Za’layia Jenkins was shot and killed while watching TV in her aunt's home, and family and neighbors held a candlelight vigil in her honor Friday.
Candles, balloons and tears mark a year since Jenkins was shot inside a North side home.
"I woke up crying. You know, I asked God for strength to deal with today," said Destiny Boone.
Her family says she was a tomboy with a big smile.
"She was strong and brave and special," Boone said.
Police said there were two groups of people shooting at each other when one bullet hit the house and killed Jenkins.
At one point, police arrested several suspects but they were later released.
A search warrant unsealed earlier this year said three suspects were spotted near 15th and Meinecke the night Jenkins was killed. Witnesses believed they were part of a possible drug deal.
"Only thing she wants in the world is to have closure," said Ramona Boone, Destiny's aunt.
For the last year Za'layia's family has marched, prayed and spoken out, asking for the people who know something to turn the suspects in. But so far that has not happened.
"You gotta be a human without a soul to do something like that and to a child and not say anything. Just let your days go on and night pass and not do anything. It's hard," said Destiny.
"You just have to know Za'Layia to know she deserves this, she deserves justice to be sought," said Ramona.
Police said this is still an active investigation. There is a $65,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
