MILWAUKEE -- The City of Milwaukee will make a bid to land a $5 billion development for Amazon.com's newly-announced second headquarters, our partners at the Milwaukee Business Journal report.

“I’ve already dashed off a letter to the CEO and we’re going to follow up with a formal application,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett told the Business Journal.

Barrett told the Journal a few likely sites in the area they'll try to pitch Amazon on include downtown, land around the airport, or the former Northridge Mall.

"Barrett said he's already started conversations with Milwaukee 7, the regions’ main private business attraction group. Other partners in the pitch would include Milwaukee County, the state or counties around Milwaukee," Milwaukee Business Journal reporter Sean Ryan says.

Amazon announced plans for the second headquarters earlier Thursday. It is expected to house as many as 50,000 employees.
