MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are asking residents who live on the east side and the Riverwest neighborhoods to be particularly cognizant of their surroundings after a string of armed robberies overnight.

Officials said seven people were targeted in a span of three hours.

All seven robberies happened between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m.

The areas that were targeted include:
  • Water Street near Brady Street
  • Humboldt Avenue near Pleasant Street
  • Murray Avenue and Park Place
  • Cass Street near Lyon street
  • Capitol Drive and Holton Street
  • Breman Street and Hadley Street
  • 38th Street and Wright Street
Police said in at least four of the armed robberies, the suspect had his face covered. They believe all four of those crimes are connected.

Kate James lives on the east side. She said every time something happens around there it's always nerve wracking.

Police say residents should take extra precautions, including:
  • Always be aware of your surroundings
  • If you are confronted by an armed suspect, remain calm and give up your valuables
  • Remember any unique physical characteristics
  • Never chase after the suspect
  • Call police as soon as you can
"I'm smart at night. I don't walk home alone. I take an Uber." James said. "It is concerning but I'm always safe or I try to be.

Police said that's a great tip -- try not to walk home alone and make sure you walk in a well-lit area.
