MILWAUKEE — Seven of the 15 Alderpeople on the Milwaukee Common Council have said that they do not have any faith that Police Chief Alfonso Morales can lead the police department, a statement authored by some of the Alders said.
"We have no confidence in Chief Morales and it’s time for him to go," the statement said.
This statement was released just before the Fire and Police Commission held a meeting with Morales that some thought would culminate in the firing of the chief. However, rather than losing his job, Morales was given 11 directives, some with tight deadlines, to reform the police department. If those changes are not made or insufficient progress is made, Morales could be fired, suspended, or demoted.
The statement issued by the Alderpeople cites multiple examples of why they believe the chief has failed including incidents at 6th and McKinley and the death ofJoel Acevedo.
The Alderpeople that signed the statement are: Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, Alderman Nik Kovac, Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd, Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II and Alderman Khalif J. Rainey.
