WAUKESHA -- A Waukesha community is in mourning after a 6-year-old child was killed while riding his bicycle. The boy was struck by a pickup truck near the intersection of East Racine and Cheviot Chase.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of E. Racine Ave. and Cheviot Chase. Police say first responders quickly arrived on the scene and took the 6-year-old to Waukesha Memorial Hospital.

"It is with our deepest sympathy to inform you that even with advanced medical intervention by emergency responders and hospital personnel the 6-year-old bicyclist passed away at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. The boy was with members of his immediate family at the time of the incident," police said in a news release Sunday.

Neighbors say the boy had been riding with his family. They had just gone to get ice cream at a nearby shop and were on their way home.

"I feel really hurt for the family, it's really hard," said Sandy Friberg who works at the area Dairy Queen. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the mom and dad,"

The pickup truck's driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with police. The name of the victim is not being released at this time, pending notification of family members.

The crash remains under investigation.
