PEWAUKEE -- A three-year-old boy was killed following a car crash in Pewaukee that also injured two adults. Their car hit a tree in Pewaukee early Sunday morning, the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department says.

First responders were called to the scene of the single-vehicle crash on Prospect Avenue at Rocky Point Road just before 6:00 a.m. Sunday.

Neighbors say the car they were in was "smashed in, the whole front crumpled in. The airbags had been deployed," recalled Steve Barth who lives just up the road from Prospect Park and Rocky Point.

Early Sunday morning, he rushed out to the intersection after a hearing a chorus of glaring sirens.

"I was hoping there was not an injury, although you suspected there was," said Barth.

Investigators say a man, a woman and the child, were driving down Prospect Park when the car they were in swerved, crossed the oncoming lane and smacked into a tree.

"It was clear he had hit it with a lot of force," said Barth.

The victims were all rushed to area hospitals, but the small child did not make it.

"I am heartbroken, I am heartbroken. Oh my gosh, unbelievable at 6 o'clock in the morning, on a Sunday. Wow, what a tragedy," said Barth.

The crash remains under investigation, the sheriff's office says. It's not yet clear what may have caused the car to lose control and crash into the tree.
