MILWAUKEE — According to the Milwaukee Police Department, one person is dead after a hit-and-run early Sunday morning.
The crash happened around 2:49 a.m. Sunday morning, near Water St. and Knapp St.
Police say a 32-year-old was walking when they were struck by an unknown vehicle traveling northbound, causing fatal injuries. The striking vehicle then left the scene.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office has identified that man as Marcus D. Robinson. First responders attempted to revive him, but eventually pronounced Robinson dead at the scene. Police say Robinson and two others were crossing Water Street to get back to their car when they were hit by another speeding driver.
Documents from the ME's office show that the roadway was lit, dry and unobstructed by construction. Staff there did not give a description of the vehicle that hit Robinson.
Watch: Hit-and-run raises concerns for Water Street neighbors:
TMJ4's Ryan Jenkins went back to the area of the crash on Sunday afternoon. There are bars, restaurants, and a lot of pedestrians in the area.
"I notice like speeding, and there's always pedestrians crossing the street. You have to be on high alert driving on Water Street, I would say," said Maddison Schlegel, a neighbor who lives in the area.
"Hopefully they turn themselves in soon," said another neighbor, Kanye, after learning that the crash was a hit-and-run.
For neighbors like Kanye, this incident hits close to home.
"I've had a close family member pass away from that and it just makes you think of the events that led up to it. Everybody is trying to get somewhere so just be mindful of that," he said.
Meanwhile, Maddison Schlegel said it's becoming too common to hear about Milwaukeeans killed by drivers in hit-and-run crashes.
"I wish that it was different than it is but unfortunately, it's becoming less and less shocking every time that it happens but it's always really sad and devastating for the families that were involved," she said.
This weekend's crash is pushing neighbors to once again plea for safer streets.
"Every time that you decide to drive it's not just yourself that you're putting at risk, and it's not just your family that you're potentially hurting. There's the ripple effect of everyone you hurt and all the people around them. You're making a huge negative impact on the world so you should really think about the outcomes of what you might do," Schlegel said.
Neighborhood reaction as MPD continues to search for a suspect.
