Cudahy inspector and former city attorney will reimburse city for repair work

The Cudahy city inspector and former city attorney and current city inspector will have to pay the City roughly $4,000 for a public sewer and laterals renovation project.

Homeowners living on Packard Avenue contacted the I-TEAM in April after learning a select group of property owners and two city VIP’s were “exempt” from paying for repairs.

Mayor John Hohenfeldt promised to investigate the matter and called the issue “an honest mistake”.

After seeking legal advice, Hohenfeldt asked council last month to consider billing property owners on Packard between Cudahy and Plankinton, a block that includes the former city attorney and current inspector.

Tuesday evening, council held a “public session” where homeowners voiced their concerns.

One homeowner asked council whether any city employees will face disciplinary action for the alleged billing mistake.

The Mayor told the homeowner during the meeting that disciplinary action related to this matter was not “public”.

After public comments wrapped up, council agreed the homeowners, city inspector and former city attorney should reimburse the city for repair work.

According to the city’s engineer, each property owner will be responsible for paying approximately $4,000 by the end of the year.

Invoices will be mailed out in August.

If the property owner cannot pay the amount in full, the City has a 10-year financing option available with an interest rate of 4.3-percent.
