WEST ALLIS — When the Wisconsin State Fair rolls around, people who live near the grounds are ready to cash in.
"We’re super close! Great location! Very convenient for people," said Alicia Rooker.
Rooker and her husband own property on South 84th Street just outside the Wisconsin State Fair Park gates. Like many of their neighbors, the Rookers see opportunity to make extra money offering their land for parking.
Just look down the street and you will see a row of people waving flags and holding signs advertising open spots.
"We take the whole 10 days off from our regular jobs, and this is what we do. Our bosses know we’re here, so we’re not playing hooky or calling in sick or anything," said Rooker.
During the last few years, their family and friends have jumped in to help. Though the extra money is nice, Rooker said the people are the best part.

"Today is a perfect day. It’s finally nice and sunny, humidity, no rain, get a perfect tan, and you just meet some really awesome people," said Rooker.
"What’s the trick? You have to be nice. You have to have a smile on your face. You have to be willing to talk to people. And just have a good time," Rooker said.
