Many of us do a good job of checking privacy settings on email and social media accounts.
But, failing to check privacy settings on other accounts like Amazon or smart devices like watches or TVs could also put you at risk of being hacked.
If you have not done a privacy check in a while, here is what you should do:
Many accounts and devices are pre-set to allow easy access to manufacturers, friends, and the public. Although you may want to allow some access and the ability to share some information, allowing too much could put you at risk for identity theft and fraud if your account is hacked.
If you set up an account or a device online and do not know how to change the settings, go to the website and click on the help section. This is often located at the bottom of the homepage. You might also find helpful blogs and videos with tips on how to best secure your information.
Use long and secure passwords, and change them frequently. It is also a good idea to avoid using the same password for multiple accounts.
Also check out over settings that allow accounts and devices to use cameras, microphones, and tracking of your activity. If you allow too much access, it could also make things easier for a hacker to spy on you and create harm. For more information on how to protect your privacy, go to staysafeonline.org.
