MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee police are investigating after a 3-year-old boy was shot and killed late Saturday night. It happened near 31st and W. Michigan street just before 10:30 p.m.
Investigators say the child got a hold of the firearm and unintentionally shot himself. The boy died due to the injuries he suffered.
Santa Medina, a certified medical assistant, happened to be visiting her daughter that lived right next door to the house where the incident occurred during moments shots were fired.
Shocked at what she heard, moments later, saw a gentleman who is said to be the uncle of the late 3 year old boy rush out asking for help.
"He was like 'can you please come help' and I was like 'is he OK' and he was like 'my nephew shot himself,'" said Medina, who immediately rushed into action. "
During these moments, Medina says the mother was incredibly distraught.
"I can still hear her screaming so I just hope its a lesson learned for everybody."
Police have yet to identify the 3-year-old victim as well, as the 26 year old suspect. It is still not clear on the charges he could possibly face.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office says the autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
