BEAVER DAM, Wis. -- Police in Beaver Dam are investigating a "suspicious death" after a shooting inside a home Saturday afternoon.

Police said around 2:45 p.m., they responded to a report of gunfire inside a home on East Third Street. Upon arrival, they found one woman shot to death.

WISC-TV reports a male suspect was arrested without incident Saturday afternoon and is being held at the Dodge County Jail, awaiting charges. Officers said the shooting was targeted and they're working to determine the relationship between the woman and the man.

Several adults and one child were also in the house when officers arrived. Investigators are working to figure out their relationship to the victim was. Investigators said they believe the person who reported the shooting to police was inside the home.

The other people living in the house were allowed to return Saturday evening.

During a press conference Saturday night, Beaver Dam chief of police John Kreuziger said the incident was being investigated as a "suspicous death" until further information could be gathered.

Kreuziger described the neighborhood around East Third Street as "quiet" and "no different than a lot of the other neighborhoods in Beaver Dam." Neighbors told WISC-TV that they heard several gunshots fired from inside the home.

According to Kreuziger, this is the first investigation of this kind in the city in nearly 30 years.

"[It is] so rare. In 28 years, we have not had a homicide," Kreuziger said.

Police planned to continue their investigation all of Saturday night and expect to continue their investigation for several days, if not several weeks. The Beaver Dam Police Department is being assisted by the Dodge County District Attorney's Office, Dodge County Sheriff's Office, Dodge County Response Team, Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
