Manitowoc concerned about doc's negative light

Manitowoc County continues to deal with the fallout of the Netflix documentary "Making a Murderer."

Some city and county leaders are concerned about what the documentary -- which features the two trials of convicted killer Steven Avery -- are doing to the area's image.

And it's not just local law enforcement receiving criticism. Phone calls and emails are also coming in to the Manitowoc Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

“Most of them seem to be disgruntled in some way about our community," bureau president Jason Ring said.

Ring says the documentary has put a negative light on the county, setting aside all that's positive.

"The Netflix doesn't capture all of that and it focuses just on one very negative aspect of our community that happened a long time ago," Ring said.

Manitowoc's mayor Justin Nickels says the city is receiving negative attention, even though it had nothing to do with the Avery case.

He wants to send a message to those outside the state of Wisconsin

“We’re safe, we're clean, and we have a good education system. We're located in a wonderful spot in the United States,” Ring said.
