West Allis police are warning area residents to be on the look-out for an imposter who claims to be a member of the West Allis Fire Department.

According to police, a West Allis resident recently reported a man who claimed to be a member of the West Allis Fire Department. The imposter came to the resident's house claiming he was sent for a "fire inspection."

The resident then called police and verified the imposter was not a member of the West Allis Fire Department.

West Allis police say the city's fire department does not perform chimney or fireplace inspections in residents’ homes. They add all fire department employees would be in uniform and would be able to produce an identification card if requested.

Police are telling residents to ask for identification if approached by anyone claiming to be a fire official. Concerned residents wishing to verify the identity of a possible fire inspector should call the fire department at (414) 302-8903.
