Three MKE chefs up for James Beard Awards

Three Milwaukee chefs who are putting our food scene on the culinary map are in the running for one of the biggest awards in the industry.

The James Beard Awards announced Tuesday that Milwaukee's Justin Carlisle of Ardent, Thomas Hauck of c. 1880 and David Swanson of Braise are semifinalists in the Best Chef: Midwest category.

Three Madison chefs were also named semifinalists in the same category -- Dan Fox of Heritage Tavern, Jonathan Hunter of Forequarter and Francesco Mangano of Osteria Papavero.

Tory Miller of E'Toile in Madison was named a semifinalist in the prestigious Outstanding Chef category.

The semifinalists in 21 categories were chosen from a list of more than 20,000 entries in 21 categories such as a best new restaurants and pastry chefs.

The finalists will be announced March 15 on Twitter, and the awards ceremony and gala will be held in Chicago May 2.
