WAUWATOSA -- There was an attempted carjacking in a busy parking lot off Mayfair Road Tuesday morning.

Bystanders watched in fear and disbelief.

"I saw a silver SUV jump over the median, pull in the lot, and a guy jumped out of the car and pointed a gun at this guy standing at the ATM near his car," said Jeremy Gwilliam, who works in the area. "He just put his arms up."

It happened at approximately 8 a.m. at the Wells Fargo ATM across from Mayfair Mall.

"It was broad daylight, in a well-lit area full of witnesses, in a business district," Gwilliam said. "It was like, is this really happening?"

Wauwatosa police said four young suspects were in the SUV. One of them tried to get away in the victim's car, but couldn't.

"He couldn't steal the BMW because it was a stick shift and he didn't know how to get it going," Gwilliam said. "He was a teenager."

They sped off from the scene before police arrived. Even though they didn't end up stealing anything, their attempt was traumatizing for a lot of people.

"The poor guy who they pointed the gun at was just trembling," Gwilliam said. "Those kids were so brazen. It basically shows they don't care if they're seen. There were a lot of people around. It seems to me they're not afraid of getting caught at all."

No one is in custody for this crime yet, but Wauwatosa police said they're following a strong lead.
