DE PERE -- Nearly 1 in 4 Wisconsin adults believe Manitowoc County law enforcement framed convicted murderer Steven Avery, according to a new survey conducted by St. Norbert College.
22 percent of survey respondents said it was either "definitely true" or "probably true" that Manitowoc County law enforcement officials fabricated evidence to frame Avery, whose story was told in the hugely popular Netflix docuseries "Making a Murderer."
Avery was convicted of killing Teresa Halbach after her 2005 disappearance.
The semi-annual "Wisconsin Survey" asks about people's opinions on national and state government, as well as economic and policy issues. 303 adults were randomly selected and surveyed via landline and cell phone for the study.
Interestingly, the numbers change when accounting for self-identified political party. Just four percent of Republicans said an Avery framing was "definitely" or "probably" true, while 31 percent of Democrats did. Democrats were also more likely to be unsure about the crime (27 percent versus 18 for Republicans).
