MILWAUKEE -- A robbery suspect remains hospitalized after being shot by an off-duty Milwaukee Police officer on the city's northwest side Sunday.

Investigators report the unarmed man stole more than $400 worth of merchandise from Sally Beauty Supply near 73rd and Good Hope Road.

Store employees tell TODAY'S TMJ4 a shopper ran outside screaming for help, and that's when she grabbed the attention of the nearby officer. The officer twice demanded the suspect freeze, but he instead escaped.

Police later caught him after a crash near 76th and Mill Road.

"It's almost terrifying," Milwaukee resident Natasha Harris lamented to TODAY'S TMJ4. "You have to look over your shoulder and worry about your kids."

Harris lives on the city's northwest side, the sight of several thefts and robberies this year. According to Milwaukee Police, the northwest side District 4 has seen 275 burglaries, 270 thefts, and 119 robberies in 2016. Together, that's an average of more than one crime per 500 residents.
