The unemployment rate in the city of Milwaukee was at its lowest point in a quarter-century, down to 4.0 percent this past May.
A report from our partners at the Milwaukee Business Journal says it’s the lowest rate the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development has on record.
Agency spokesman John Dipko told the MBJ it matched the previous low seen in December 1997. Dipko said records date back to 1990.
In May of last year, the unemployment level was 5.5 percent. The 1.5 percent decrease is the second largest of any large Wisconsin city, according to DWD date.
Only Racine saw a bigger drop from this year to last. Last May its unemployment was 5.9 percent, and fell to 4.2 percent this year, the lowest rate Racine has seen since 1990.
The entire state of Wisconsin and Milwaukee’s unemployment rates for May are lower than the national rate, which was 4.3 percent.
