Milwaukee Police have taken one man into custody while they search for a second man after a shootout on the city's south side Sunday night.
Police say a man shot at officers at a gas station near Oklahoma Avenue and 7th Street. He is still on the run, but a 25-year-old man was taken into custody as a person of interest.
Police responded to a suspicious vehicle around 6:20 p.m. As officers arrived, they encountered the armed man who fired a handgun at them. An officer returned fire but no one was struck. The suspect returned to his vehicle and then fled the scene.
Margaret Barczynski says she was taking a nap with her children in their living room, just about 100 feet from where shots rang out.
"We fly to the window and there's a shootout with the cops and some guy," she said. "Everybody's running, I see a car [with] no lights on just blast through the alley and within 30 seconds there were cops everywhere."
Barcynski says in the two years she's owned her home, she feels like there's been an increase in crime.
"Thank God, they were aiming in the direction they were," said Barczynski. "There were no innocent bystanders, no houses got hit, I mean thank God everybody was ok but it's getting bad around here."
She says Sunday's incident though was the worst she's seen.
"You don't know where the next bullet's gonna fly, it's scary," she said.
Police say officers recovered the vehicle and the man's handgun. The vehicle was reported stolen.
No one was injured in this incident. Detectives interviewed several witnesses, and they also reviewed surveillance video from the gas station.
