MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors rejected a plan to balance the budget by doubling the county wheel tax during its annual budget meeting Monday.

The proposed budget by Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele would have raised the current vehicle registration fee from $30 to $60. That would have generated about $13 million for the county.

The county board defeated that measure 16-2, instead of voting for a plan that cuts county programs and services across the board.

The County Board approved the full budget 15-3, which incudes cuts to the zoo, parks department and sheriff's office.
