In Monday’s State of the City address Mayor Tom Barrett pointed to the building boom in Milwaukee as proof the city is headed in the right direction.
With no shortage of projects from apartment buildings to the new Bucks Arena the demand for skilled workers is high.
Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) said its enrollment in the electrical apprenticeship program has doubled from 86 in 2013, to 220 in 2016. Waukesha Technical College (WTC) also saw an increase from 64 to 122 respectively.
Carpentry student Fred Prinz has been helping his father with remodel jobs for years, but now wants to turn it into a full time job.
“There’s a million houses being renovated, there’s houses going up,” Prinz said. “There’s apartment buildings, there’s new buildings left and right it’s kind of like pick your job.”
The “help wanted” sign has also extended to the schools as well. Both colleges have hired several full time and part time professors to help out with the extra student demands.
