MILWAUKEE -- A special awards luncheon was held in downtown Milwaukee Tuesday afternoon to honor more than 50 law enforcement officers and a handful of community members for their heroic acts.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office gave out certificates and plaques to citizens who helped deputies solve crimes by reporting suspicious activity.
Other law enforcement officers were praised for arresting armed carjacking suspects and performing life-saving CPR to an inmate.
"We gather as we do each fall to honor the efforts of those who have made a positive impact on our community," Inspector Richard Schmidt said. "I often remind our staff that public safety is the most honorable form of sacrifice."
Wisconsin State Trooper David Schmitt was also awarded a letter of commendation for arresting a wrong way drunk driver on Interstate 45.

Sheriff David Clarke was not in attendance. His spokesperson said he was on a business trip in New York.
