SUSSEX -- A 16-year-old boy is in serious condition after being shot near a busy shopping area in Sussex Saturday afternoon.

The incident began at approximately 3:30 p.m. near Highway 164 and Silver Spring Drive, by Pick 'n Save and the Bugline Trail.

Jessica Carpenter was inside Pick 'n Save when she saw an ambulance go by.

"And then our person at the service desk picked up the air phone, rang over the store and said 'Hey just to let everyone know, we’re on lockdown," Carpenter said.

Every business in the Pick 'n Save parking lot and across the street went on lockdown as deputies worked to secure a crime scene.

“We located a male subject with a gunshot wound laying in the grass in the area between the Bugline Trail and the north side of the Pick 'n Save parking lot," said Jennifer Wallschlaeger with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies call the shooting an isolated incident, but won't explain why they believe the public was not in danger.

Businesses like Culver's remained closed for about an hour.

”Some lady came in though. She said she was just running on the Bugline Trail and she heard like three rounds go off,"  said Jerry Freitag who was at Culver's during the lockdown. "I’ve never heard of anything like this ever happening."

The teenage victim was initially taken to Waukesha Memorial, then transferred to Children's Hospital where deputies said his injuries are life-threatening.
