It's prom season. That means a lot of high schoolers are coming up with "corny" ways to get a date. Including one Jefferson High School student whose idea was just "a-maize-ing."
Carl Ehrke did what any farm boy would do in this situation, he hopped on a tractor and went to work on his family's corn field.
"I've always kind of wanted to do that kind of thing even before I was seeing her, I was just kinda like 'if I get a girlfriend, I want to do something special,'" said Ehrke, a junior at Jefferson High.
He comes from a farming family and his school even has a "Drive your tractor day," so Ehrke knows his way around a John Deere.
"We went out there and kinda eyed out the piece of land and I had a friend stand on top of the hill and he told me which way to go, a little bit this way, that way to keep it even," he said.
The final result: a sky-high promposal, smooth as silk. It can be seen from the air in Chopper 4, in a field near the Jefferson Speedway on Highway 18.
"I got her up to the top of the hill and all of a sudden, her eyes just lit up," said Ehrke.
His date, Audrey Pelikan said she was very surprised.
"[He] was just coming back in the tractor and that's a normal thing so then all of a sudden we go behind the hill, behind his house and there it was," she said.
And she says no one at her school could top it.
"It definitely was better than the typical poster that everyone does," said Pelikan.
The couple has been dating for over a year, so Ehrke said he knew she'd say "yes." And she did. They celebrated prom a couple of weeks ago.
But now the pressure is on for senior year.
"Next year will probably be bigger," said Ehrke.
