GREENFIELD -- Greenfield police officers were shot at late Tuesday night while following a vehicle.

The officers were in Milwaukee near 27th and North Avenue on an investigation when they saw a vehicle driving recklessly. The vehicle matched the description of a vehicle used in a robbery, so the officers started to follow it.

A few blocks later the car stopped and shots were fired at the unmarked squad car.

"Our officers were simply ambushed. Shots were fired at them, before they had a chance to react at all, the vehicle took off and fled from the scene" said Detective Sergeant Eric Lindstrom.

The officers called in the vehicle to dispatch and it wasn't until an hour later that the vehicle crashed after being chased by officers. The three people inside, a 21-year-old man, 31-year-old woman, and 18-year-old woman, all from Milwaukee, were taken into custody.

No one was injured in the shooting and the shots that were fired did not appear to hit anything according to Milwaukee Police, the agency investigating the shooting. The suspects are expected to be charged later this week.
