Governor Walker: "No way" Wisconsin is dropping "America's Dairyland" from license plates

MADISON -- Governor Scott Walker says "America's Dairyland" is here to stay on Wisconsin license plates.

Appearing on the WI Farm Report Radio Network, the governor told Farm Director Pam Jahnke that discussion at the state level to possibly change the slogan that appears on the plates isn't going anywhere.

"Well, there's no way we're changing America's Dairyland," the governor said. "The plates represent a nice cross-section from farming, to agriculture, to tourism, to the great north. The plates are just fine the way they are, we're proud to be America's Dairyland."

Last month, the head of the state chamber of commerce says it may be time to do away with "America's Dairyland" on Wisconsin license plates.

Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce President Kurt Bauer floated the idea at a luncheon attended by hundreds of the state's business leaders.

Bauer said that other slogans like "Forward" might be more appropriate to modernize perceptions of the state's economy, rather than just focusing on agriculture. "Forward" is the state's official motto, while "America's Dairyland" has graced vehicle license plates since 1940 to celebrate Wisconsin's prominence in milk and cheese production.
